Attributed sharing from Flickr to Pinterest «... →
Nice! Flickr is making it easier to share photos from there on to hot new site Pinterest with attribution back to the original source. Not a huge deal, but with the plethora of sites out there, easing sharing and giving credit where it’s due are both Very Good Things….

Free guide to data journalism, and why reporters... →
Man, I would have loved this when I was still doing investigative reporting, back in the dark ages of computing. I used simple databases and geographic information systems to come up with a couple of good projects back then, but would have gone crazy with the opportunities possible through today’s widely available databases of public information and the computing power and tools to do...

21% of US Households Have an Internet-Connected TV →
Smart TVs coming? Hah! They’re already here, especially if you’re a gamer. These stats show one in five US homes already has a Net-connected TV.
I’m streaming Netflix and ESPN3 and YouTube on my Xbox, (and not buying cable TV service). Turns out that something like 21 million other American households do the same thing with their game machine.
If and when Apple comes out with...

– New Study Reveals Best Social Media for Search Ranking : The World :: American Express OPEN Forum
A self-admittedly not-scientific study suggests that Google search results are most likely to be positively affected having a site on Google+ business pages, at least compared to sites on Facebook...

– How to Handle a Yelp Attack : Technology :: American Express OPEN Forum
This is a terrific, if basic, guide for small businesses that get whacked with a nasty review in Yelp (or for that matter, other review sites that cover their business).

Tumblr Plans to Cash In. Will 53 Million Bloggers... →
Interesting solution by Tumblr to revenue generation: let brands show their posts to everyone’s feed.
I don’t hugely mind that, but question whether it really makes sense. The most powerful online advertising is the stuff that hits the people who’ve demonstrated the most interest in that product/brand/pastime/stuff. This would turn Tumblr into a remarkably un-nuanced throwback...

Shira Lazar: How George Clinton Is Using Indiegogo... →
Love George Clinton and deeply amused that he’s levering Kickstarter competitor Indiegogo to finance efforts to get more of his music out there. He’s one of the institutions of modern American music.

Damon Albarn - Dr Dee: album stream →
If you’re a fan like me of Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz), go here to stream his newest. As the Guardian puts it, it’s an Afro-pastoral rock opera about a 16th Century mathematician. Of course. Only Albarn. Which is why I’m a fan.

Roger McNamee: We're on the edge of a big shift... →
Roger McNamee, a big venture capitalist with Elevation Partners, has had a few hits (Facebook, Yelp) and a few misses (Palm, Forbes (he says at least for now)). But he thinks we’re on the edge of a big pendulum shift away from the trend of the past eight years or so, which has seen content completely commoditized and devalued.
“We’re at the very start of something we...

Some obvious (and quite ancient) choices here, but like any good list, it’ll stir up conversation about who works to open up the Internet and freedom of expression

Can an Algorithm Write a Better News Story Than a... →
It’s a troll-bait question (at least in journalism circles), but this story about algorithms being developed to auto-write lots of little stories about a zillion fast-breaking or incredibly mundane stories is sure to drive human journalists slightly nuts.
Really, it’s just an extension of what Demand Media and Associated Content and other content farms have been doing for a few years,...

Karl Wallinger & World Party is Twice the Party -... →
SUCH great news. I love World Party and Karl Wallinger, whose great pop chops have been largely silenced the past decade as a result of a 2001 aneurysm. Finally, though, he’s putting out a five-disc collection of B sides, demos and other odds and ends from his illustrious career. I hope this is prologue to a return to creating new stuff too.
If you don’t know World Party’s...

China Escalates Crackdown on Internet Amid Scandal... →
China is continuing to grapple with the challenges of allowing “just a bit” of freedom of expression in its country, especially on the chaotic and free-flowing Internet sites that dominate social media there.
The Bo Xilai scandal and all the related craziness of that mess will eventually be tamped down, but it won’t be the last time something blows up before the authorities can...
