Types of Los Angeles stories: an ongoing list

That first LA Story, the New Yorker out of his/her element, is so common as to be cliche. There are so many New Yorkers here, it’s hard to believe anyone’s left back East to actually eat the bagels and pizza and serious intellectual conversation they rhapsodize about here.

spiegelman:

- A fish out of water story, with the fish being an actor or writer and the water being New York City.

- A behind-the-scenes style experience with a celebrity, typically involving booze, psychics, kissing, violence and/or vomit.

- Some rambling thing about streets and driving.

- A lurid account of crime and corruption.

- A character profile of some wacky character.

Gamasutra: William Volk's Blog - Movies that Made Gaming, Three Films that influenced the design and direction of Video Games. → gamasutra.com

Not a particularly deep textual analysis, but he’s spot on in the three he’s picked. Anyone out there have other nominees for movies that transformed the videogame world?

Report predicts what new tech will be mainstream in ten years (and beyond) | SmartPlanet → smartplanet.com

Don’t believe the hype: Gartner looks at 1,900 technologies and assesses where they are in the hype v. reality cycle. Biometrics, gesture recognition and cloud computing are pretty close to fully baked, likely to be widely embraced within two to five years.

More interesting is the likelihood of 3D bio-printing being fully available within a decade. It’s the ability to build replacement parts for humans by layering and growing cellular material. Researchers been able to build and implant a replacement trachea in one or two instances (tracheas are highly structured, so they’re good for this sort of thing).

This is all pretty interesting stuff. Gartner will do a free webinar on the report on Aug. 25 for those who are really interested.

“But last year it was claimed that over a five-month period, 1m plays of Lady Gaga’s hit Poker Face – one of the most popular songs on [Spotify] – earned her just $167.” —

Well, this should become quite the game-changer for, you know, people who want to make a living in the music business.

Watch out for those books with a soul....

littlemousling:

a-ndy:

it’s strange to me still that people would prefer holding a piece of plastic with a screen that has no life or soul instead of a book with pages; texture, ridges, ripped bits, markings, and a soul.

It’s strange to me that people get so obsessed with physical objects that they grant them imaginary supernatural aspects.

If I ever run into a book with a soul, I’m running the other way. Didn’t you learn anything from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets?

ShortFormBlog: In case you were wondering about the accuracy/relevance of the Iowa Straw Poll... → shortformblog.tumblr.com

The Ames Straw Poll, this little rundown suggests, is NOT the leading indicator of the likely GOP nominee. Can’t really blame someone like Romney (or even Perry) for taking a pass on a process that’s not going to affect their candidacy notably.
